OPERATION HELMET LINER |
One year ago in April 2009, Ronnie, a marine came into the store and asked if he could park his truck in our parking lot as they were cutting down a tree at his apartment building which is right down the street from the shop. Without hesitation I said yes, as my husband also is a proud owner of a Dodge Ram. As Ronnie was looking around, he realized what kind of store he was in and told me he wanted to buy a present for a grandmotherly type friend of his. Thru the course of our conversation it came out that he was a marine and had served in Iraq. I knew instantly what his grandmotherly type friend would want to knit for him. I showed him the pattern for the helmet liner. He immediately wanted to purchase one and I informed him that they were not for sale, he instantly got tears in his eyes and very emotional explaining the need for this little item. I told him he didn't let me finish my sentence, and proceeded to tell him we could only donate them to the soldiers. A smile beamed on his face, I ask how many were in his unit. As word got out, the 45 he neededed turned into 145 and than our goal of 5500. We have reached that goal and now have reset it to 10,000. There is a far greater need for the helmet liner than the beanie. But keep them both coming. Remember whatever you knit or crochet has to be in acceptable military colors and only 100% wool or 100% superwash wool can be used. This is for the safety of our soldiers. We thank you all for your support and hope that you will continue to provide the soldiers with loving items from home. |
