I always know that spring is here when I see the white buds on the Bradford Pear trees. It gets me excited as Spring is my favorite time of year. The most beautiful colors appear in nature and they make my eyes sing. When I order yarn, most of the time I order it, number one based on texture, and number two on color. This year, the decisions were not hard at all. Spring yarns are usually great all year round in Texas and this year is no exception. For me the hardest thing to do is finish a project I know that I can’t wear immediately, so my fourth Twizzle sweater is still lacking one sleeve and the rest of the neck, but those new spring yarns were not whispering to me they were shouting, and they won! I fought to no avail and have started two of the spring tops. The new yarn has come in in such delicious colors it was hard for me to choose, which colors to start with. WHAT’S NEW YOU ASK? PLYMOUTH YARN COMPANY has come out with new colors in DREAMBABY a beautiful true mint, a lovely coral, a new orange and one called camouflage, which is a white background with camo colored dots, very little boyish. They have added DREAMIN which is a 540 yard skein of yarn that comes with a sweater pattern on the inside of the label to their phenomenal baby yarn line, right next to DREAMBABY SHINE which is Dreambaby with a rayon wrap. All three yarns are acrylic/nylon mixtures. Now is the time of year we start worrying about Grass, leave it to Plymouth to give us something we don’t have to mow!! 65% cotton/35% hemp, knits 5 stitches to the inch on a US 7, the swatch is in progress. Looks beautiful knitted and the two customers who have bought it and knit with it already tell me they love it. There is a cute little pattern that Plymouth calls the Layering Top. The pattern is rows of eyelets and than stockinette and throw a row of purl in every few rows and it produces a feminine little top for spring, summer. KUDO is a great Texas yarn, Cotton/Rayon/Silk make for a lovely soft, self striping yarn. They have added 4 more patterns to the line. The entrelac coat will have to wait until fall but it is on my list and I am already working on the new cropped cardigan and sleeveless shell tops. KOLLAGE YARNS - One of my favorite yarn companies to work with. The owners are fun people to deal with and their personalities show up in their yarns. If I had to make a decision here I could not. I love all of the natural yarns. They are famous for their milk yarn and I did not think they could outdo themselves after that, but, they have. We now have MILKY WHEY, an absolute lovely mixture of 50% Milk/50% Soy, and so very soft. The swatch is almost done, I want to put another needles size in and than wash it before I put it on the shelve. Peach, pink, yellow, cornflower blue just to name a few of the soft colors. If that weren’t enough they had to come out with TEMPTATION, 65% Bamboo/27% Cotton/8% Nylon, one of the started new shop models. The colors are delicious! Sunshine yellow, Raspberry Red, Teal, Purple, Lavendar, Lime to name just a few. 18 Stitches = 4 inches on a US 8. Another Texas Spring/Summer/Fall yarn! MUENCH YARNS - My absolute favorite company to deal with in the world. Their Lana Grossa line has my favorite yarn of all. BIOSAJA - 40% Organic Soy/34% Organic Cotton/26% Organic Bamboo, and let me tell you, it feels incredible. Every customer has felt the partial swatch has fallen in love. We had six colors in stock and have sold out of one with more colors on the way. This color line has soft and bold colors in it. 22 stitches over 4 inches on a US 6-7, the colors gradient into another color so soft and gently. It feels very light weight and the shop model in this is almost done, hopefully by the weekend. Skacel Yarns - Not be outdone, Skacel has fast become our favorite sock yarn distributor. As if Zauberball wasn’t crazy enough for us to knit with they had to come out with Zauberball Crazy. This sock yarn has to be the most popular sock yarn on the market. We cannot keep it in stock and they cannot keep us with the orders. We constantly have colors on back order. It is a lovely yarn to make scarves, shawls and socks. It is monochromatic and the shading of the colors makes it so easy and exciting to knit with. Than of course they come out with more new sock yarn. This is called DEGRADEE COLOR, 60% Superwash wool/25% bamboo and 15% polymid, I love the gentle change of color and anything with Bamboo wicks away dirt and is easier to keep clean and helps in Texas summers to keep us cooler. If that weren’t enough how about Fancy Sox. I have seen it all now, novelty sock yarn and the customers love it. There is a little hairy, a little ribbon, a few slubs, and some wool and woolah, party socks! Party colors to boot! At this time I want to thank a few people before we get into our class list. First off we want to thank Community Coffee for their award. Community Coffee is based out of New Orleans, any donations you give them for the military not only will they match your donation they will ship it at their expense! Thank you Community Coffee. Let me tell you about Eddie Power. An absolutely lovely gentlemen close to 70 years old. He has been knitting since he was 6 years old. He has really jumped on the band wagon for helmet liners. The first time he came into the store to deliver helmet liners they were so pretty I hated telling him that they did not meet military standards and that we could not accept them. I explained that the yarn had to be wool and why, that the colors had to be military colors and explained why and what a great attitude this man had. After taking to him about gauge and all the other subjects we touched on, he bought the correct yarn with money supplied to him by his neighbors in Duncanville (they wanted to participate also) and to town he went making wonderful, warm and fitted helmet liners. He kindly took his helmet liners and some that had been donated to us that were not appropriate to give to the troops and passed them out to the homeless people under the bridge in Dallas. My hat is off to you Mr. Power, we appreciate people like you! Abbey, our tap dance dancer will be getting lots of sets of leggings I think! We are having so much fun in our tap class. I can’t remember if I have announced this or not so please forgive me in advance ( I have a birthday coming up and I am blaming everything on that!) Innovative Dance, in the same strip center is offering tap lessons, once a week for an hour. $50.00 for the month. Those of us taking it are loving it, too bad we can’t remember the steps once we leave the dance studio! IT'S A GROOM'S PARTY AND YOUR INVITED! Mike our dollar a minute massage man is leaving us! This Thursday, March 11, 2010 will be Mike's last visit for massages at Yarn Heaven. He has asked his lovely girlfriend to marry him and she has said yes, so Mike and his awesome guide dog Mimi will be leaving us to move to Florida where the wedding will take place. Please come join us for a Groom's Shower! Food, fun and a massage. We will miss Mike and wish him and his lovely bride the very best! I want to remind everyone in the Your Sweater Your Way class that we are meeting at 10:30 on March 27 to show off our gorgeous sweaters, be prepared for pictures. I think the owners at Mountain Colors yarns would love to see all of your sweaters and we are going to make them proud! Jean and Velma you are almost there! One last item and one to the classes. For those transplants from the eastern states that miss our Philly Cheese Steaks, we have found one of our own!! It’s called Donny’s Hotdogs on the corner of Turner Warnell and Matlock. My husband and I are weekly regulars to this little establishment. They even have Tastycakes and Birch Root Beer, all the foods we are used to getting from the east. Try then once and you will return! Precious, one of the loves of my life. I am so proud of you. Yes, she has graduated, top of her class, scheduled her first licensing test and is now considered a respitory therapist! You have come a long way young lady and your real journey is just beginning. I love watching you take the steps to the top! HELMET LINER DRIVE How do we keep saying thank you? By just saying THANK YOU. If you could only see the soldiers that I get to see, their expressions, their raw emotions, their gratitude, you would know why I keep going. For example, this last week, Danny Garza from Lewisville, TX came into the store with his mother, grandmother, sister, aunt/neighbor and girlfriend. In came in the store in full uniform to pick up and take back to Afghanistan with him, approximately 300 helmet liners, scarfs and beannies. There are a few pictures which show the raw emotion and as soon as Lori is feeling better we will get the pictures loaded. I washed the flash drive that had my copy of the pictures in my washing machine and dried it in the dryer, so I am a little nervous about putting it in the computer. Daniel, thank you for your service, you know we appreciate you. With every service person we learn a little more. Daniel informed us they were fighting in approximately 4 feet of snow. He is a medic with the Marines and I noticed he had no medic insignia on his uniform. He told us that medics are targets and are not allowed to wear their insignia because of that. Keep these men and women in your thoughts, please, they are just doing their jobs, and doing a great job at that. We have upped our goal to 10,000 to please keep them coming!
